1. What is art?
Art is any created form
that evokes an emotional response either positive or negative. This can be done
with painting, sculpture, photography or ceramics. The art of creating is not
exclusive to the fine arts. Craftsmen are artists as well. When we see that
perfect piece of furniture that was made with talent and precision we form an
emotional connection with that piece.
2. What is an artist? Is this an exclusive or inclusive
title? Are titles necessary?
An artist is someone that uses what they feel
and experience to evoke an emotional response in the viewer of their work. The
title is inclusive because I think if an individual feels that they are an
artist and are putting themselves into the work they are creating then who
would I be to judge them and say they’re not. The title of artist is not
necessary to define what someone creates as art.
3. Why make art at all?
Art is an expression that can be used to speak
of the past, present and future. Art can be used to view history and understand a culture and people. Art should be made to carry an emotion or feeling on to
future generations so we can be better understood on a personal level when we are the ancestors.
4. How do you assess art?
This is one of the more difficult questions to ask.
My opinion of art is different from the next persons. That is what’s so
fantastic about it all. There is a market for every kind of art that is
created. I don’t think that there is “good” or “bad” art. Sometimes art may
bring up negative emotions but that doesn’t make it bad. I think to some people there is a distinction
between “low” and “high brow” art, but I feel people who do not understand the
creative process make this distinction.
