Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
This was very ambitious and i think this is a really good exercise in value. That being said, Some darker blocks of light and dark could have really accentuated the piece more.
I think that your piece will be a lot more successful once you have a greater variations of darks and highlights. As it is now, the fact that it is primarily midtones keeps it from resembling the master copy.
I think your master copy is very successful, great value shifts. In your master study I would just add more light boxes to create more shifts in value. Also, make the boxes more individualized like in your master copy. I think if you had less blurring of the boxes together it would more closely resemble your master copy.
I think both were quite successful, but the second one does not have enough range in value, which gives the head a very flat appearance. Bringing out the light values would make this piece more successful.
I think that your master copy is quite successful however, the values in your original piece the values are a bit too literal. The master copy has oddly placed white and black areas that work well to add depth.
Like everyone else mentioned, this is a very difficult procedure and using a wider range of values would give a greater sense of depth in your original piece, but the background and values in the clothing was a nice touch. I think you did extremely well with the mater copy because it shows a range of values to the face and a very good sense of proportion.
Nice job on a very challenging piece. I think your copy came out very nice. The only thing your study needed was a broader range of lights and darks and more misplaced dark spots. Overall I think it was well done.
You nailed the proportions, which I think is the most difficult part of this method. In addition to a greater range of values, the master study could benefit from highlights here and there; sudden areas of black and white. Great job!
Very nice job, I agree with most of the posts here, that more contrast in lights and darks would benefit your original work. I also think crisper lines for the value boxes would help. Some of boxes began to bleed into each other due to the smudging. That said, they still work as a series.
I feel like you have grasped the artist style and expressed it well in your master study. However in your master copy there seems to be more highlights which are critical to its style that you didn't quite capture. Also the original seems to have more of a pixel effect which I know was hard to replicate. Awesome job.
You have a great value scale in every box but you could’ve mixed up spots of value like the artist did in the original piece. Adding highlights in the hair and face could bring out the face from the background.

ReplyDeleteI feel as if your version could use more pixels to become more like chucks piece, but over all good interpretation of his work
