 MASTER COPY

MASTER STUDY

  1. Your effort is there and choosing to do a painting is very difficulut given the nature of the material and how tie consuming a finished painting can be. The energy of the master copy was a bit lost int he second image.

  2. The composition of your piece and the mark-making technique are obviously similar, but I think that your study doesn't capture the same energy as the master copy. I'm not quite sure if it is because the action of your figures are so different, or if its because the subject matter contrast so greatly.

  3. I really like the energy of your master copy. The facial expression is great. I think if your master study had a more energetic looking figure, the two pieces would relate more as a series.

  4. The mark making and composition are very similar. The use of creating value with paint makes this piece very great. I agree with Isabelle on the fact that the emotions are very different, but other than that, It is successful.

  5. The mark making remains consistent throughout, and a nice range of mid tones is used.

  6. I like the change in moods you did between the two pieces, one sleeping and one being tough Bruce Lee. The mark-making is consistent but lacking detail and range in the second one.

  7. The subject matter was the flaw to pairing the paintings as a set. The Bruce Lee painting is really awesome, displaying form, motion, action, emotion, value contrasts and figurative posture which the master study lacked.

  8. Your copy was done really well. Nice mark making and contrast. The study didn't seem to fit with the energy of the copy, though.

  9. I think you did a good job at representing the tones of the master copy. but i think the style of the over all figure are not quite the look of the artist.

  10. I think mark making is what really disconnects these two pieces. Bruce is defined almost completely by changes in value rather than hard lines, whereas the figure in the study is almost mostly defined by contour. Its okay that the copy is full of action and energy and the study is calm and quiet, but i think a more value based mark making system would better mimic the original artist's style. Though it doesn't entirely relate to the copy, i really like the study as a stand alone piece, its very expressive and emotive.

  11. Your master copy is fantastic. I like where you were going with your original work, but I think there is less variation of hues in your original, and that combined with less dynamic mark making in your original kind of reduces the effectiveness of your piece.

  12. I really enjoy both pieces however the mark making between them is a little different. I can imagine it was difficult to replicate. I also believe your copy was done from a sleeping person which is hard because I know they tend to move. Your master copy also has more emotion which is hard to replicate in your study with someone who is sleeping.

  13. The master copy's use of the value scale works good but the master study could use more range from the value scale. Maybe add more hatch marks and darker tones to the master study. They differ by composition (the master copy is vertical and the master study is horizontal), and the master copy is more grounded compared to the master study that seems to have the figure floating in space. I like the use of acrylics for both pieces.

  14. I love Bruce Lee. I like how you caught the original emotion of the artist and Lee’s actual personality.

Mark making is similar. Seems to have lost some of the value scale and a strong emotion that was portrayed in the copy
