Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
I liked the individual works, and that you incorporated negative space. I did feel that the balance of images and negative space did not balance as well aesthetically, making the images appear disjointed in their relationship.
I enjoyed your use of transfer techniques and the theme of movement and "flight." The images on the left and right side are not the same size and take away slightly from the flow of the picture, but not from the overall composition.
I liked that the dancers and the birds seem to morph together with eachother. I think this piece was very relate-able in that most artists go through one or many what do I do now moments, where we want to "fly", but are held back by financial or life realities that stand in the way.
Figures are expressive, you could have used more variation in line-work. Also all the figures are the same size, the composition would be stronger if they were varied or exactly the same. There's a narrative here, but the spacing and white areas could have been stronger compositionally.
I like that you experimented with different techniques of transfer and collage. I love your concept in that you are like a bird and want to be free. I think all of this feel this way at some point in our life. To help make this more successful I would suggest playing around with your negative space and composition.
I did not get the sense of a cohesive composition with this piece. I understood what you were trying to get across to the viewer, but there is something that is causing the figures to seem separate from each other. As it stands now, I feel that there are multiple narratives occurring at the same time.
I really like the feel of your piece and the sketchy quality of some of the figures. I would just think more about composition, and maybe play with depth a little more, having some figures in the foreground and others pushing into the background.
I love your piece, I like the concept of feeling caged and wanting to escape I can definately relate to that feeling. I think all the images do need more incorporation to make it a little more balenced.
I think stylistically the piece is very well done. Your theme of freedom and migration was evident to me. I would recommend a little less negative space on the right hand side and perhaps a few more birds would balance the composition a bit more. Nicely done.
The figures are done very well especially the ones in the bottom right corner. I feel like those are the most successful due to the great line work contrasting with the blocks of value. Overall, I feel like the negative space does not help tie the rest of the piece together. It almost seems as though three pieces are going on at the same time. Maybe focus more on composition and placement to help this.
There is a good use of negative space and the figurative postures express great emotion. The birds in the negative space create a great sense of space and displays a story of rising and falling. I think you did well in symbolizing the fear and despair of the ever changing future as well as showing freedom and enjoyment with the figures.
