Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
I love the surrealism in this piece. There is a great composition and balance with these figures, and the values are well done in the deer and elk/buck. I like the collage with the male and female mammals (humans). It works great with what you said during critique, that we (humans) need to remember that we are a part of nature and its changes. Great job!
I really enjoyed your images. I did feel a level of disconnection between the images and their background, which initially I thought was intended but came to believe it was not when your ideas for your image were relayed.
I really like the idea of the Horned “God-like” figure. The composition is nice. I would have liked to see more meaning in the mudras but think they worked really well on the heads coming out of the belly.
Your use of positive and negative space is really great. I love that there is balance between your black and white space and between your figures. I also thought the use of the hands is really cleaver. The fact that it didn't look like a traditional collage rather, a print, was really awesome.
this looks like the cover of a CD, the negative space is used very purposefully here. It would have been interesting if the two figures were sitting on just a white patch instead of a branch, would have given it a more isolated and ominous feel to it
I like the value of the branch that the two figures are sitting on. Your use with the eraser and dark lines make it look very realistic. Very cool concept with the animal heads.
I like that your piece has a very strong message in that, even though we are human we are still animals. The hands covering that head in the laps are also very intriguing to look at. Your extreme used of value and the placement of the tree brach make this piece very successful. Very well done.
I really think that the message of this piece would read even better if it you do it in a larger size. There are so many little details that get lost unless the viewer is up close. Overall I like the sketchiness of your drawing style and I think that it works well with the surrealism of the piece.
I agree with the comments above this piece has a surrealistic quality. I love the composition it is very balanced and has a solum tone overall. My only question is why did you include such a big piece of tree compared to the side of the creatures.
I really like the contrast in your piece. I like the mixture of the stark black background with the lighter figures and branch. But maybe using more values on the figures to make them look more sculpted would push that contrast even more, making the background look more flat.
I thought this piece was very well done. It has very nice symmetry, everything flows well. I think the heads in the laps might want to be a little bigger though. I didn't really notice them until they were mentioned. Otherwise, very nice.
I really like the quality of your linework in the body of the figures. I love how sketchy and simple the lines are but they are easily readable and are able to create a sense of dimension. They also contrast really well with the detailed deer heads and the branch. I like how the background is completely black but at the same time it feels a bit empty. Maybe some sort of subtle textures or slight changes would make it feel more full?
The quality of the line work is done well. The dimension is really nice and fun here. I agree with HUy that there could be some textures to add to the background.
The display of Mankind and Nature fits in this collage. The Black negative space gives the feeling of night and the two figures brings the sense of Adam and Eve. The dark background really brings focus onto the figures. Little values and dimension on the figures create a flat image but the shades on the branch give some depth to the overall collage.
