Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
You had stated that your goal was to challenge yourself and create a surreal image. I feel that you are successful in doing so. I like the composition of the figures sitting on the large hand gazing at the moon. The contrast between black and white with tints and shade of blue are lovely in the way they blend into each other. The tissue creates a great texture on the page as well.
The composition is lovely. The color and texture is really nice as well. The dark blue next to the tree seems to cut into it so I would have liked to see the tree come over the color.
I really like the effect the blue color has on the image. It makes the scene look like a mystical forest scene. I like your composition and I think it looks well-balanced.
I think this was a successful experiment, it has the desired effect it was going for. I would suggest mixing realistic drawings with more surreal images. Keep experimenting, interesting things can happen.
What impressed me most was your use of materials. The tissue paper looks like washes of watercolor. In my own opinion, your decision to use mixed media adds to the surreal effect.
Very nice. This piece gave me the sense of being in a moonlit wood at midnight, very surreal. The only thing I would change is the patch of blue in the lower left corner. Just seemed a litte out of place and unbalanced the piece slightly for me.
I like your use of color and darks in this piece. Both of those aspects really stand out in this work. Furthermore, your subjects really stand out strongly.
I love your use of materials I think you did a really good job. I think the bottom left corner is distracting though so I think you could do away with the blue.
The single blue color was enough to draw my eye to to the collage and the sky reminds me of the milky way galaxy. It sort of looks like the figure's souls are being pulled into the moon. The whole piece looks like it was done in watercolor.
I think you were most effective in your use of media. You were able to merge the harsh, opaque world of charcoal with the luminescence of the tissue paper to get a watercolor effect, though in a way that would have been impossible to create using actual watercolors. Well done! I do wish that the blue swatch in the lower left hand corner either didn't exist or fell behind the tree, because it draws my eye off the page, and that the light coming from the moon actually extended off the page, but these are sort of personal wishes. I think your really conquered the challenge you gave yourself.
