Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
The composition is great in this piece. The lighting works and brings attention to the subject. Even though there is no specific detail, the piece still feels whole (not flat).
As always, I think the execution of your technique is flawless, I really enjoyed the fact there was less detail in the image, creating a feel that can be captured through photography, drawing your eyes to the part of the image that is in focus, increasing its importance in the piece.
I really like to see the progression. The lights and darks look really nice. Good use of the value scale. I think the antiquing was a nice touch. I would have liked to see more definition in the atrium in the background. Seems a little blurry which almost gives it an “Impressionist” feel.
I thought this piece was soft and very visually appealing. I love the layering techniques and even the use of the leaf brush in the tree. I know you said that you wanted to add more detail to the piece and I guess I would like to see more done to the background. Your aunt is so polished so I think that would really tie it all together.
I really liked your use of Photoshop to create the collage piece. It still had a very real appearance to it as if you had manually done the piece in rough charcoal and scanned it. Very cool, and I like to gold color you applied to it also.
The mood of the painting is nice, this isn't really a collage though. Even though you go for hyper realistic, the style you have now is more painterly and expressive. You could explore stylization more in the future.
I loved seeing the steps you took make the final piece. I have never worked with digital media but you seem to have mastered it. It look like a hand drawn picture by the end. I like the use of the sepia tine and the contrast in value you have include. Amazing job.
I think that you made a smart move by showing the class how your piece was constructed. In traditional non-electronic artwork this is something that the viewer has a hard time imagining, and it is not so much something that the artist usually considers. In your piece I felt that the process was just as important as the finished product. In this sense, in my opinion your work was a collage on two levels. It was a collage because in the traditional sense because it was made up of separate collected images. It was also a collage in the progression of your technique.
I like the ethereal quality of this piece, it feels very free form and airy. I also like your choice to use digital medium, and think the different layers are a cool take on the traditional collage. I just would have liked to have seen some more fine details.
The lighting is fantaztic in your piece, and yes I love the steps of process. I think there could be more traces of the sepia tone throughout the processes so that it all look conhesive.
I think your piece is beautifully done. I think showing the class the steps in creating the piece helped a lot for those of us who have never worked in digital media. The piece doesn't really strike me as what I would consider a "collage" though, but nicely done all the same.
I really like how you took a more stylized approach in this piece. The line work when examining it up close looks great especially amongst the trees and shrubbery. It almost looks as though you were literally painting with light due to the color and marks. Furthermore, I love how the detail recedes in the piece.

ReplyDeleteI like this piece a lot. I actually think it worked better as black and white then the sepia. But, beside that very nicely done.
