Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
In this piece I get the feeling of a higher power overseeing the smaller figures or almost like a hierarchy. This is like the traditional Egyptian paintings with the figure being either larger or smaller than each other to portray rank and hierarchy amongst each other. Your largest figure seems like the overlooking power, especially in the figure's body language and red glow of the eyes. My own narrative to this work would be Big Brother watching over every one through their excessive use of social media (the woman figure looks as if she is vomiting a keyboard). I like that some of the smaller figures are cut out contour lines connected to their bodies.
I like the use of color. The light cutouts are a nice contrast to the dark hierarchal images. I really like this piece a lot; it brings up a lot of emotion.
I like the texture you created with the spray paint. I also think the image is very interesting and thought provoking. It reminds me of a storyteller, with all the little children sitting around.
The mixture of mediums created something interesting. Your figures need some work though, they're heavily outlined and seem to float in space. Stylistically this can be a choice, however without understudying the rules of figure drawing, one cannot break those rules successfully. Before you start experimenting with figurative styles, learning to actually draw them proportionally and with mass and weight can greatly benefit your style later.
I love your use of color and meaning for this piece. The mixed medium was very interesting and the white figures again the dark background really pop. Your picture also seem to tell a story about a higher power. Good job.
What I enjoyed the most about this piece was realizing that the figures that you used were ones that I had seen before. The way you utilized the figures, and how you composed them made them seem entirely new to me. I also enjoyed the pop of color that I see in the very center of the image. It is the first thing that draws the eye and then the viewer follows the small figures in a circular pattern around the picture plane. Every time my eyes did a "lap" I found something else that I liked.
I like the different textures and patterns in your piece, and the variation of values in the background. But I would suggest adding some value to the smaller figures too, then I think they would tie in better to the rest of the piece.
I like how this piece can be interpreted in many different ways depending on who's viewing it. For instance, the splash of rainbow colors made me think the piece was making of a statement about LGBT and how we all come from the same place and should be equals. TO me your piece was very thought provoking. The only suggestions I would make would be to add a little more detail to the smaller figures and a little more depth to the background. Nicely done.
I love the way this piece looks. I especially like your smaller figures. They look great on the picture plane and very stylized. Furthermore, your use of color is great. I like how you only used color in a few places but you were able to make the piece still feel balanced and whole.
I think that if you were hoping to illustrate a strong message without saying it in your artist statement, then you were successful. It gave me a political impression, big brother-esq at the same time it reminded me so much of the back of the Sistine chapel with all the depictions of Hell's tortures. You had mentioned that the black spray paint did not turn out as you had planned but I think it gives your piece a foreboding aura. I really liked the simple use of color but almost with you had used just a bit more on your larger figures to separate them a bit more.
I love your use of previous drawings in class, I think your piece is cool its like nothing i have seen before good job. I love the use of spray paint as well.
This is a very strange composition that displays a hierarchy design in the deformed but recognizable figures. It's a mystery as to what the story behind the figures are. I like your small colorful marks and this is a very textured piece.
I'm not sure if this is what you intended, but i interpreted your piece as playful when i first saw it in class. I saw the little ghost-like blind contour people (which are incredibly clever and creative) climbing and playing on the bigger monument-like figures in the background as if on a jungle gym. I'm glad to have had this reading of your piece and i understand your decision to omit an artist statement, but i find myself wishing i had a clearer picture of what was going on in your mind when you made it. Ideology aside, your execution is very good: the composition is effective, as is the use of color, and the mix of media create an interesting effect. That said, the large figures sink into the background a lot. I think the piece might benefit if they were brought forward by maybe a slight tone shift from the background. Awesome work!

ReplyDeleteAll the figures on the bottom really work for this piece. The color aspect is really great. It allows the piece to be complete as a whole.
