Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
This piece feels surreal with the hands growing out of the trunk. The shadow doesn't match the shape of the tree with hands but it looks like you ran out of space on the paper. The tree trunk can be more rigid so that it doesn't read as a forearm. Great idea for a collage drawing.
I really enjoyed this piece, I liked the selective use of color, which created a more uncanny feel along with the discrepancy in the shadow of the tree and the form of the tree. It seemed very deliberate and planned, making the discordant parts work together.
This piece does have a fantasy feel to it, although the hands i thought could be integrated with the tree more. The leaves are the only thing colored which makes it appear unfinished. keep experimenting with the idea, it could be pushed further.
Concept is great however I think more hands would make it more successful. I also am confuse and the shadow of the tree it not the shadow the tree should have. More or less leaves would make the piece more successful.
I think that the simplicity of the image is what makes this piece work. You could have easily overwhelmed the viewer with too many hands and figurative elements. I recall that you mentioned your frustration with how the middle hand turned out. Personally, I thought that his was intentional because I felt that it added a sense of whimsy to the overall surrealism of the piece.
I really like the sculpted, smooth quality of your piece. The hands are really well done. I would just suggest thinking more about your use of color, like maybe making the grass green too. So I think more color would add a lot to the piece.
I liked this piece, very surreal. The mark-making is very nice. I would suggest adding some color to the apple to make it "pop" a bit and perhaps making the shadow match the tree a bit more. Nice job.
I like how your approached the shadow and the grass at the bottom. I feel those are very successful in your piece. The hands stand out really well also. I suggest you add more color and possibly more value to the tree to create more depth to the piece.
Your tree came out great! It really reminded me of the book The Giving Tree, but that thought made me kind of sad lol. Anyway, I would maybe suggest matching the shadow to the shape of your tree if realistic is what you were going for. Also, using different charcoals and charcoal techniques could give your tree greater dimension and texture.
I love this piece I think it looks like a story book piece which I love how illustrated it is. I think the touch of color you provided adds a great touch, and I disagree with the class saying the color disoriented the picture. I think it adds a simple touch.
The juxtaposition of a tree with hands for branches was i creative idea. I liked how you incorporated the leafs to be the only colored pieces but coloring the apple would've made for a stronger piece of visual design. There is a very good range in values along with good use of negative space.

ReplyDeleteThe hands on the tree are very nice. The color works well to direct the eye. The addition of red to the apple would have completed the color.
