Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
I agree that the use of the one bold color is working, however your face looks a bit cartoonish, use less hard lines while defining your face and more smoother transitions of light to dark. Remember, your face is juts a series of forms, shades and shapes.
The blue cloth is very eye catching and the negative space really centers in on the portrait. I can't help but feel that the proportions off, like the eyes seem to close to each other.
I like the expressive quality of the face, and I like that you incorporated some color, I do think that a little more color might help bring the piece together. Placing the bright blue on the headpiece really made that more of the focal point.
I agree with everyone about adding some more bright-brights and dark-darks from the value scale. It will help with dimension and bring your portrait from 2-D to a more full, 3-D looking form. I love the expression on the face; it seems to have some type of narrative, story the person has, or history in the eyes.
I really like your facial expression. It makes your self portrait more interesting to look at. Your facial features are pretty well proportions and I think a little more attention to the transition of your values will greatly benefit you.
your use of color in this piece is perfect! the blue does a great job of adding both depth and character. In addition to broadening the value scale, i think increasing the sense of light from the right hand side of the page would add even more drama to your expression.
I love the work you put into the bandana in this piece. The blues look great and all the values are on point. It makes me sort of wish this whole piece was in color as the bandana area stands out so much compared to the rest of the figure.
I love the expression on your face, its really comical the way you are glaring at the mirror. Maybe showing frustration. The blue bandana also works very well. Maybe a bit of blending on the neck would be nice.
Sue Blekkenk- I love your expression on your face and the bright blue bandanna. I wish I the meaning behind it! I know we both have struggled with self portraits all year but this is by far my favorite of yours thus far in class. I love the shading in your face, however I still wish there was more contrast in your face, such as highlights and low lights. Good job!
I really like the use of one bright color. I think it makes this piece successful. Your line work is really great as well.

ReplyDeleteI like the way your have posed yourself in this piece. I think that if you work on sharpening your darks and lights this piece will pop out even more.
