Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
very soft and sensitive feeling. it doesn't quite look like you, and you emphasis the contour of the body too much. Remember weight and line variation.
The rounded figure seemed to be neat. The negative space gives me a sense of emptiness but the expression on the face seemed to be content. I'd like to see the statement behind this piece. Seems like an illustration that holds more to a story.
The sketchy quality of your lines works extremely well with the composition. I think that had your portrait taken up more of the picture plane, the visual narrative would have come across completely different.
I like the concept and line quality, however I find the stark white of the right a little incongruous with the very light gray surrounding the figure. Maybe if it was a little more gradual.
This is very soft in mark making and in the value scale. I agree with Julia about the stark white in the right compared to the gray shading around the figure not being in harmony with each other. Maybe if you pulled your shading out to the right to create a horizon line.
This portrait gives me the impression of "quiet." And that makes perfect sense because I remember you talking about how you were trying to portray your more shy side. I think that the soft lines and positioning in the corner are perfectly added elements that attain that goal.
I like your self portrait, I think you did a good job. I feel as if your portraying yourself as lonely and I also feel like you could have done something with the negative space to the right. it just looks strange.
The softness of this piece is very effective. I love how "light" it feels. Furthermore, putting yourself in the corner works strongly with the idea of softness which seems like something you were trying to convey.
I really like how the figure is barely there but, and this is kind of weird, but i think its currently either too there, or not there enough. you could create an even more ghostly atmosphere if you decreased the value across the board, or you could deepen the darks and push the realism. I like it as it is, but i would like to see it go one way or another. you nailed the proportions!
Isabelle Lydick- I love how you your piece is very symbolic of who you are. You said you chose grey to communicate how quite you are, and the way you are positioned suggests you also like to feel safe perhaps? I like your use of line and value.
The fact that image is cuddled up in a corner says a lot about what message you are trying to convey. The line work and shading are very nice as well.

ReplyDeleteI like this piece very much. The sketchiness of the lines, position of body, and use of negative space says a lot about you as an artist.

ReplyDeleteI love the composition and the grey you used. The color works well with the off-white paper and tone of the portrait.
