Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
Your self portrait is great. But what really interests me more is the fluid like motions of the background color. Its like wings spread out from you back. This is a subtle but very expressive portrait.
I like the overall use of color, and I love the color use in the necklace. I agree with some of the comments, as your figure seems to fade into the negative space.
Perhaps just enhancing the lights and darks of the value scale in your body would compete the image so that you become more lively. I think the negative space looks fine being minimal; less is more. The shading and highlights look great in your eyes and lips. Maybe since the color looks transparent is why people are saying it looks unfinished?, and that could be because of the surface you had to work on.
I like your piece. however I would suggest looking at your shadows, especially on the inner left arm. It's very dark and doesn't seem to match any other shadows in the piece. Made it hard to tell where the light was coming from.
Love your portrait. I think that you have a very soft way of using your tools and values. I think that your proportions may be slightly elongated however it doesn't take away from the overall composition. Can't complain about the colors, I think they're great.
Great job! you did such a good job it looks soo creative and fantaztic. I love the shapes behind you I feel like you did such a great job of making the colorful background flow with the black and white figure.
I love what you've done with this piece. there is an incredibly complex and intriguing relationship between the pale, listless portrait and the fluid, explosive color in the background. I"m just having a lot of fun looking at it and letting my eyes wander around the shapes and colors. I kind of wish it were huge, like 5'x7' or something like that. I also think that if you added some more deep darks to the figure it would simultaneously make the colors pop and the piece as a whole feel more finished.
I love the colors and the shapes throughout the piece. Something about the figure seems empty to me. I feel if you had added color to yourself it would be a lot more effective.
Yvonne Gandert- Your composition is very interesting. You are place dead center while colors swirl around you. I love the soft midtones in your face, they say so much with so little.
I enjoy how the color is very strong around your image and the green shirt is very soft. I also like how you are in black and white.
ReplyDeletenice colors, feels a bit unfinished.

ReplyDeleteI love the designs in the background, great color choices too. I would just suggest adding more dark darks, so you pop out more and look more 3D.
ReplyDeleteSomeone earlier mentioned that it looked unfinished. I think that added a solid color in the negative space would "finish" the composition.
