Students learn basic anatomy and will begin to develop an understanding of the way a figure inhabits space; thus able to successfully reproduce this space in two dimensions. The goal of the course is to learn academic, realistic representation of the figure: Emphasis will be on accurately rendering the figure on the page in proper proportion. Students work up to developing a personal style within the confines of academic figurative art.
The figure looks a bit askew and stiff. The ribs are too pronounced and the feet look off. The color is a bit flat, some warm colors would help balance the skin tone more. The puple pillow has some nice rich colors though.
I think that your stylistic choice to depict the model in a diagonal may be why the figure comes across as stiff. Also adding to this perception is that the proportions of your figure are a bit off. For instance, if you slant your head to the right, you can see that her torso seems unnaturally long.
I really like the texture in your pice. The smooth lines are very nice. I would just work on proportion a bit more, like the hip seems to come out a little too far.
I think your had very good shifts of value om the models body from the breasts up. However, from the breast down something seems a bit off, maybe the proportions? Also the diagonal aspect in your composition is a hard to read it comes off distorted.
I think it was an interesting choice to paint the figure on the diagonal. It seems a little askew to me, especially with the diagonal lines behind the figure. I think I would like it more if it was displayed with the figure being horizontal.
I like the expression you captured on her face and the shadows and highlights are good. The proportions seem a little off ( the hip seems unnaturally large) and I would suggest adding something to the white area at the bottom. It tends to draw the eye away from the figure.
I love the way you created the background. The quick simple brushstrokes and colors look great. All the colors throughout the background and the pillows look very rich, colorful, and successful . If you had translated that into the figure then the figure would stand out a lot stronger.
This is a very dramatic angle. I love the ranges in colors. The brush strokes add a definite perspective to the dynamic and vibrant colors of the room and space.
I recall seeing your piece taped up at an angle as you painted this, and was very curious to see how it look "straightened." I think it works so well! Very nice way to make the composition more dynamic. The brush strokes are really interesting to see on this piece and really make it its own.
I love how you did this piece, i think her eyes are too stark for my liking but the angle is very intersing, and I love the the direct line of color behind niece composition.
The color in the background is very nice. It really draws the attention to the figure.

ReplyDeleteI really like the colors used in the background, and the red stripes against the purple pillow. Some more warm tones would help the figure look alive.

ReplyDeleteThe figure looks very still, and the angle is a bit forced. I like the loose brushwork used for the pillows.
