I found the work of Mark Demsteader to be very effective, and well-described in his artist's statement. His paintings and drawings are uniquely styled so that portions of the composition have fine detail and a wide range of values, where as other parts of the composition are contour lines with little change in values.
His artists statement seemed to emphasize his expertise and prestige within the genre of contemporary figurative art. He worked with life drawing in order to develop figures with emotion and an interesting narrative. These would inspire people to want to know more about the figures in the paintings or drawings.
